Neighbors shocked after gunshots hit duplex, gas line in Portland

Oct 15, 2024

PORTLAND (WGME) – Police are trying to figure out who fired shots that hit a Portland duplex.

Police say the shots were fired on Eleanor Street off Forest Avenue Sunday night.

Officers arrived and smelled gas, and then learned a gas line had been hit by gunfire.

That gas line was shut off.

There were no reports of injuries.

One of the residents living in the duplex says her family were woken up by gunshots around 11 p.m. Sunday night.

She asked to stay anonymous, but says her family was shaken up by the gun shots. She says there were multiple bullets that went through one of her children's bedroom walls.

She also says due to the gas leak, her family stayed in a hotel last night while the Portland Fire Department fixed the gas line rupture.

CBS13 spoke to multiple neighbors who said they were shocked something like this would occur on their street. One neighbor has lived on the street for over 40 years and says that her neighborhood is "relatively quiet, and people keep to themselves."

"I heard gunshots, then I looked out the window and saw someone running," another neighbor said.

CBS13 reached out to Portland Police Department, and they say it is an active investigation, but they don't believe there is any danger to the public.

Police are asking anyone with information about what happened to give them a call at (207) 874-8575.
