TRP TRAIL EVO BRAKE REVIEW: THE MOUNTAIN BIKE BRAKE YOU CAN FULLY TRUST

Mar 12, 2023

TRP's Trail EVO brakes share a lot of traits with their big brother, the DH-R EVO. The Ergonomic lever blade, reach adjustment and robust construction are all examples of that. For ease of mounting, TRP has used a hinged lever clamp to mount the master cylinders without having to take the grips off. They’ve also made these brakes I-Spec II compatible with I-Spec EV adapters available. When the lever is squeezed it drives a 10mm internal piston to compress the newly formulated mineral oil which activates the stainless steel pistons. TRP uses a banjo to connect the caliper to the 5mm brake hose which makes it easier to set the angle of the hose from the caliper. A new resin pad has been developed for quiet performance as they squeeze the 2.3mm rotor between them for the ultimate stopping power. There is a wide variety of CNCed disc adapters, rotor sizes and styles so you can get the most out of your Trail EVOs.

We put a lot of faith into the brakes on every ride and have had many good and bad experiences, but TRP is generally a good experience across the board. We tested the Trail EVOs on a lot of various terrain, from long downhills to quick trials moves. To say we fully trust these brakes is the highest praise we can give them and don't say it lightly. In the time we’ve had them, we’ve never had an urgent need to bleed them outside of normal bleed intervals, nor has there been a problem with them overheating on long descents. Modulation for stunts like stoppies and wheelies was easy to find with a minimal adjustment period. When set correctly in from the grips on the bar, one-finger braking is comfortable and thoughtless. A simple reach adjustment knob makes it easy to adjust the levers to your preferred position whether you have large or small hands. We also praise their robust alloy construction even to the point where one of our test riders chose to run them on his dirt jumper to ride at the skate park where the bike is often crashed on concrete. That set has a lot of scuffs, but nothing yet has been bent. We’re confident in recommending these brakes for trail or even enduro bikes if you want a good, reliable brake that will keep a consistent feel ride after ride.
